One Avenger’s number might be up.
It’s no secret that Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War will mean the end for an Avenger — according to directors Joe and Anthony Russo — and the new trailer has a hint to who that unlucky character might be.
Warning: potential spoilers ahead!
The latest trailer for Avengers: Infinity War features Captain America facing off against Thanos, which is pulled directly from the Infinity Gauntlet comic that the movie is heavily inspired by. Unfortunately, if things go the way they did in the comics, then it could be Cap’s last stand.
The trailer shows Thanos reaching out to manhandle Cap with his massive hand sporting a ⅓-complete Infinity Gauntlet and Cap using all of his strength to resist the purple villain. The incredibly strong Thanos is barely trying whereas Cap is having the struggle of his life, but it’s the fact that Cap is in mortal danger and he’s still putting up a fight all by himself that makes it such an inspiring and intense moment.
While the parallel scene from the Infinity Gauntlet comic isn’t a direct one-to-one, it’s essentially the same in a thematic sense. There, Thanos has finished completing the Infinity Gauntlet and is basking in his godlike power, but Cap strides forward in a show of pure bravery to confront him anyway. Cap doesn’t even flinch as the mighty Thanos moves to attack him. This has since become an iconic moment in Marvel lore that acts as an example of what pure bravery looks like, not to mention it’s regarded as one of Captain America’s most badass moments.
That said, Cap did this to distract Thanos so that Silver Surfer could zoom in, snatch the Gauntlet and rob him of his power. The plan fails miserably as Thanos reacts in time to dodge the Surfer and then effortlessly strikes down Cap with a backhand blow, killing him instantly.
If this scene from the comic tells us anything, it’s that Steve Rogers might be meeting his end at Thanos’ hand in Infinity War. It certainly would deal quite the blow to the Avengers and show just how evil and powerful Thanos is. But given how different the two scenes are – Thanos hasn’t even finished the Infinity Gauntlet in the trailer, for one – there’s no telling what this moment will lead to in the movie. We’ll have to wait and see until April 27 to find out.
