Stony Brook University invites all members of the community, our students, faculty, staff and alumni to join us for CommUniversity Day on Saturday, September 21. This incredible festival of fun and discovery highlights the very best the University and Hospital have to offer the community. Enjoy an afternoon of exhilarating exploration, great food, hands-on activities, wellness screenings, student performances and demonstrations. Everyone is welcome to attend, and admission and parking are free. It’s a day not to be missed.
Visit a variety of themed campus “neighborhoods” and uncover things about Stony Brook University that you might not have known. There will be activities for kids, sport clinics, tai chi demonstrations, health screenings, cultural exhibits, giveaways and more. Visit the expanded Discovery Zone featuring high-tech toys from the iCreate Lab and interactive favorites, such as the stream table and Kenya Dig It for future archaeologists. Learn about music at the Instrument Petting Zoo and try your hand at playing a Theremin. Drop by our Find Out in 15 tent to see posters from Stony Brook’s talented student researchers, who will be available to answer your questions.
After grabbing a bite to eat from the food court and food trucks, stop by the Staller Center table to pick up your free kazoo so you can participate in playing a tune during “Kazoo-niversity.” Test your skills at the drowsy driving simulator or have a free dental screening in the Health and Safety neighborhood. And back by popular demand will be the Teddy Bear clinic where young children (while supplies last) can learn to treat a wounded bear (or treat their own favorite stuffed animal). Cap your day with the ice cream social and the popular rubber duck race, a Stony Brook tradition.
Also, for the first time, Michael Bernstein, Stony Brook University’s Interim President, will be on hand to speak to the crowd.
Several new activities added this year include:
- Create a Senegalese glass painting craft
- Speak into the mic at the Outdoor TV Studio
- Take an improv lesson from the Alda Center for Communicating Science
- Make a catapult
- Launch a Foam Rocket
- Learn to knit or crochet with SB Stitchers
- Open Play with our Champion Lacrosse teams
- View the George Washington Letter at 12 pm (sign up at the University Library table)
“CommUniversity Day was created to encourage our friends and neighbors to experience for themselves what we do at Stony Brook University. It’s been great to see people of all ages fill our Academic Mall, interact with our students and staff, have fun and learn something new, all at the same time. What a great way to spend the day!” said Joan Dickinson, Director of Community Relations and Executive Director of CommUniversity Day. “We’re really looking forward to this year’s event and hope even more members of the community will come out to join in the festivities.”
Parking and admission to CommUniversity Day are free but registration is required to receive a free, reusable tote bag. Register online at stonybrook.edu/sbucommuniversity and bring your receipt ticket to an Info Tent to receive your free bag. The tote bag and all giveaways are while supplies last.
CommUniversity Day will be held rain or shine from 12 pm to 4 pm. Come for the fun and food and stay for the pre-game festivities at Seawolves Town beginning at 4 pm and the football game against Fordham at 6 pm.
