Premiering in 2019.
Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller is developing a TV series centered on Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth.
Epix has given a 10-episode straight-to-series for the show, simply titled Pennyworth. It won’t be a Gotham spin-off, but rather its own story focusing on Alfred’s origins as a former British SAS soldier. He eventually forms a security company and goes to work with Bruce Wayne’s father Thomas Wayne in 1960’s London.
Production will begin later this year, with the series slated to premiere in 2019. Heller will serve as executive producer and writer, while Danny Cannon (Gotham) will also executive produce and direct the pilot.
Casting has not yet begun as Sean Pertwee, who portrays Alfred Pennyworth on Gotham, won’t be involved.
Gotham has recently been renewed for a fifth and final season, which will focus on Bruce Wayne’s transformation into the Dark Knight. IGN recently interviewed Gotham EP/showrunner John Stephens about ending the series with Batman.
