The PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller is about to get an late-life upgrade. Sony is gearing up to release the DualShock 4 Back Button on January 27, with a price tag of $29.99. You can check out our hands-on DualShock 4 Back Button impressions and then place your preorder to get it on day one.
The DualShock 4 Back Button is a controller add-on that snaps into the undercarriage of your PS4 controller. It adds not one, but two, fully customizable buttons to your PlayStation controller. And because these buttons are on the back of the controller, close to where your fingers normally rest, they’re easy to access for instant, perfectly timed button presses.

The add-on plugs into the controller’s headphone jack, but it has a headphone jack of its own, so you’re not losing access to the port. Once you have it snapped into place, you can use the device’s built-in screen to program the buttons to count as any other button of your choice. You can even save up to three presets so you don’t have to program it each time you switch games.
Customizable rear controller buttons aren’t entirely new. They’ve been available on peripherals like the Xbox Elite Controller and third-party pro controllers in the past.
But they’re great for a variety of players. They appeal to serious, competitive gamers who are looking for any leg up they can get on the competition. They also provide accessibility for people who struggle with standard button layouts.
If you’re interested in seeing what kinds of advantages the Back Button can do for you, lock in your preorder now.
