Instead, The Rise of Skywalker introduced Kerri Russell’s character, Zorii Bliss, as a former cohort of Poe’s from his days as a spice runner on Kijimi. While the two flirted throughout the film, Zorii rebuffed Poe’s offer of a kiss (and his suggestive “how you doin’?” look during the Resistance’s victory), and we last saw Poe embracing both Finn and Rey during the film’s climax.
This isn’t the first time Isaac has hinted at a dynamic between his character and John Boyega’s that could be read as more than platonic, teasing in an interview before the opening of The Force Awakens, “I think it’s very subtle romance that’s happening. You have to just look very closely – you have to watch it a few times to see the little hints, but there was. At least I was playing romance.”Boyega shared his opinions on the Finn/Poe relationship with Variety, noting, “They’ve always had a quite loving and open relationship in which it wouldn’t be too weird if it went beyond it. But at the same time, they are just platonic at the moment.”
While it seems like Finn and Poe’s potential relationship is destined to remain, as Boyega once allegedly told a reporter, “in Oscar’s head,” The Rise of Skywalker did feature the Star Wars franchise’s first on-screen gay kiss (albeit one that has been met with criticism for being “pandering,” featuring characters of “relative insignificance” in the franchise, and being brief and incidental enough to the plot that, “should any of the film’s international markets balk, can easily be removed”).
Several Star Wars books have also featured LGBT characters, including a prequel novel that seemed to imply Laura Dern’s Amilyn Holdo was pansexual.
