Wheatley previously directed the movies High Rise starring Tom Hiddleston and Free Fire starring Brie Larson. It was previously reported in April that Amy Jump, a writer for both of those movies, was hired to write the Tomb Raider sequel.
The first Tomb Raider movie starring Vikander was released in 2018 directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave) and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Alastair Siddons (Trespass Against Us) with a story by Robertson-Dworet and Evan Daugherty (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Tomb Raider may have opened in second place domestically against the fifth weekend of Black Panther, but still pulled in about $275 million at the box office despite negative reviews from critics.
The last Tomb Raider video game released was Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018. In IGN’s review, we called the game “a rollicking, horror-kissed action-adventure and an introspective story about obsession and family.”
On the other hand, we said in our review of the 2018 movie that it’s “a passable action movie” that “disappointingly chooses not to adapt what made Lara an interesting and deep character.”
